For product teams
Three ways to engage.
Advanced Research and Concepts offers three connected services. You can engage any one of them on its own, and each is built to feed the next: research shapes strategy, and strategy shapes the launch.
Who I work with
Teams making high-stakes product and strategy decisions who want research before they commit.
- Private equity firms and their portfolio companies
- Growth-stage startups
- Large corporations
- Industrial and traditional businesses, such as manufacturing, distribution, and field services
- Small businesses
Most of my depth is in healthcare and life sciences, and the method travels across industries.
01
Research & Intelligence
These engagements give your team the evidence it needs before it commits to a direction. I conduct original research across your market, your users, and the edges of your competitive landscape. The output is a set of findings your team can act on.
What this includes
Competitive Landscape Analysis
A ten-step structured process that reads the competitive landscape as a set of forward-looking signals. I examine capabilities and positioning alongside hiring patterns, messaging shifts, product launches, partnership announcements, and funding trajectories. Together they show where a competitor is heading before it says so publicly. The analysis closes with a buyer voice layer: how real buyers describe the category in their own words, what they consistently praise and criticize, and where the gap between vendor claims and buyer experience points to genuine opportunity. The output is an executive summary and five strategic implications calibrated to your specific priorities and roadmap.
Market Research & Sizing
I treat market research as an investigation. The approach combines structured industry analysis with firsthand accounts from practitioners inside the market: forum discussions, personal narratives, and unfiltered buyer perspectives. Published reports capture what is happening at scale; primary accounts reveal what it actually feels like to operate there. Every engagement closes with a STEEP analysis surfacing the forces reshaping the market, and a clear map of which questions remain open and require primary research to answer.
User Research & Interviews
Original qualitative research with the people your product is built for. I design and run the research myself. The goal is to surface what users actually do, believe, and need, including what they can't put into words.
This is the right engagement if
- You are about to make a significant product or strategy decision and need more evidence to make it confidently
- Your team has been operating on assumptions that have not been tested in the market
- You need research that will hold up to scrutiny from leadership or a board
02
Strategy & Direction
These engagements help leadership teams make the decisions that are hardest to make internally: what to build, when to build it, why it matters, and what to stop doing.
The ARC Method brings together three disciplines to do that work: human-centered design to understand the people you're solving for, systems thinking to understand the ecosystem they live within, and strategic foresight to test your strategy against a world that keeps changing faster than most plans can accommodate.
What this includes
Concept Development
A seven-step process where design criteria come before concept generation. I first establish what a successful solution must do, for whom, and under what constraints. Analogous research then surfaces how adjacent industries and disciplines have solved related problems. Concepts are generated at volume, stress-tested through structured critique, and refined before prioritization using a weighted scoring model. Each surviving concept is documented as a testable artifact with stated hypotheses, leap-of-faith assumptions, and risks laid out clearly. The output is a prioritized concept set with a recommended starting point, ready to move directly into prototyping or evaluative research.
Strategic Foresight
I map multiple plausible futures, including discontinuous ones, and check that your strategy holds up across them. The goal is to reduce the risk of being right about your product and wrong about the world it launches into. Typical outputs include scenario sets, signal analysis, and an assessment of where your current strategy is most vulnerable to change.
Product Roadmap Development & Prioritization
I help teams decide what to build next, and why, with research behind it. For products already in market, that includes framing KPIs and OKRs around outcomes, feature discovery and prioritization for shipped products, experiment design and instrumentation, and a leadership operating cadence that keeps the roadmap honest as reality changes.
I lead the work myself and take on a limited number of clients.
KPIs and OKRs: health metrics you watch, and change goals you chase.
- Outcome-oriented KPIs and OKRs: metrics that inform decisions without OKR theater
- Feature discovery and prioritization for products already shipping
- Experiment design and instrumentation so bets can be tested
- Leadership operating cadence for roadmap review and tradeoffs
Workshop Facilitation
I design and facilitate working sessions across formats and scales. They range from focused leadership workshops and cross-functional strategy sessions to hackathons, innovation challenges, and multi-day offsites. The design of the session matters as much as the facilitation of it. I bring the same research and strategic discipline to structuring the questions, the agenda, and the outputs as to running the room.
AI Capability Building
Organizations tend to focus AI investment on what goes into their products. I focus on the parallel question: how AI changes the way your teams work. I start by mapping how people across product, marketing, customer support, and other teams actually work, identify where the most meaningful inefficiencies live, and build the tools and Claude skills that eliminate them. The output is working infrastructure your team uses from day one, built around how your organization already operates.
This is the right engagement if
- Your team is aligned on a problem but cannot agree on a direction
- You have a roadmap but it does not survive the first hard question from leadership
- You are preparing a strategy for a market or technology environment that is changing faster than your planning cycle
- You know AI should be changing how your team works but you have not been able to make that concrete
- You have a product in market and prioritization is noisy, political, or metric-driven without outcome clarity
- You need evidence-backed roadmap and feature decisions that go beyond backlog grooming
- Leadership wants a senior, research-led partner inside the product cadence (fractional or embedded), not a large agency bench
- The next bet is high-stakes: wrong sequence or wrong feature set would waste a quarter
03
Go‑to‑Market & Execution
These engagements connect the strategy to the launch, with particular depth in product-led growth and early-stage UX.
This is the most flexible service I offer. Depending on what you need, an engagement can range from a focused deliverable (a positioning framework, a GTM plan) to full embedded execution support where I am actively involved in implementing the work alongside your team.
What this includes
GTM Strategy
A complete plan for how your product reaches the market: target segments, messaging, channels, sequencing, and the metrics that tell you whether it is working. Built from the research up.
Product Positioning
An eight-step process that starts with competitive alternatives instead of the product itself. Before assessing what makes a product distinctive, I map what buyers would actually use if the product did not exist, including workarounds, internal builds, and doing nothing. That landscape determines which attributes are genuinely valuable and to whom. It closes with an explicit decision about market framing: whether to compete head-to-head in an established category, dominate a subsegment where the category leader's rules do not apply, or define a new category entirely. The output is a positioning canvas that drives downstream work: sales narrative, website and outbound messaging, pricing review, and feature prioritization input.
Product-Led Growth
Strategy and execution for products where the product itself is the primary acquisition and retention mechanism. Covers onboarding, activation, expansion loops, and the instrumentation to understand what is working.
UX/UI & Workflow Design
Early-stage UX work grounded in user research. I can take a concept from research-informed wireframes through to a tested interaction model, with particular depth in workflow-heavy product categories.
Customer Success
I treat customer success as research. The CSMs who drive retention and expansion are the ones who understand their customers at a level most teams never reach. They know what the customer does, their jobs to be done, their most significant pain points, and the opportunities they are actively pursuing. That understanding is what allows a CS team to connect product value to customer reality in a way that is specific enough to matter. With early-stage companies, I build a CS organization from the ground up: team structure, processes, and playbooks. With established organizations, I help existing teams build and apply that customer knowledge.
This is the right engagement if
- You have a product or feature ready to launch and need a clear, researched path to market
- Your positioning is not landing with buyers
- You are trying to build a growth motion into a product that was not designed with one
- You need a senior practitioner to own a UX workstream directly
Is an independent product strategy consultant right for my team?
It depends on the decision in front of you. I'm a good fit when the decision is high-stakes or time-bound, your assumptions haven't been tested in the market, or you need research that will hold up with leadership or a board. I'm also a fit when a product is in market and prioritization has become noisy or political. I'm the wrong fit when the problem is evolutionary and internal continuity matters more than outside evidence, or when you need a large agency bench. I assess fit before we start, and if the problem isn't right for me, I'll say so.
A note on how these services fit together
The three services often run in order, but they don't have to. You can bring me in at any stage. If you already have the research and need help making the strategic call, that is a Strategy & Direction engagement. If you have the strategy and need help executing the launch, that is Go-to-Market & Execution.
If you are not sure which applies to your situation, reach out with a brief description of what you are working on. That is usually the fastest way to figure it out together.
